History

Obverse: On the left is a coat of arms bearing the Chula Mongkut (Phra Kiao) crown, radiating light and set upon a tiered tray, the royal emblem of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). On the right is a coat of arms bearing the Padma Unalom emblem, radiating light and set upon a tiered tray, the royal emblem of King Phutthayotfa Chulalok (Rama I). Between the two coats of arms is an unalom.
King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) ascended the throne in 1868 (B.E. 2411) at the age of only fifteen, with Somdet Chaophraya Borom Maha Si Suriyawong serving as regent. In 1895 (B.E. 2438) he had been on the throne for twenty-seven years, equal to the length of the reign of King Phutthayotfa Chulalok (Rama I). Counted in days, the two reigns were exactly equal at 10,015 days, as of 3 March R.S. 114, 1896 (B.E. 2439) (in the present-day calendar). His Majesty therefore graciously commanded that a commemorative medal be made to mark the Fifth Reign equalling the First Reign.
